AMI’s Role in Society

The African Media Initiative (AMI) is an unprecedented pan-African effort aimed at providing the continent’s media owners and practitioners with the tools they need to play an effective role in their societies. AMI aims to strengthen the media sector in Africa to ensure the accountability of government and other institutions and to promote social development, economic growth and the empowerment of the powerless, especially women.

To help it fully play this role, AMI and its partners support the development of a private media sector that is professionally proficient, financially sustainable, technologically adaptable, and socially responsible. Through an evidence-based and holistic programme of activity that combines strategic partnerships, advocacy and targeted pilot projects, AMI will work to bring about much needed legal, fiscal and economic policy reforms, increased access to financing, state of the art management and technology capacity building, and greater emphasis on leadership and ethics.

To that end, AMI will serve as an important continental catalyst for transformational change within the media sector and a powerful interlocutor for and advocate among key regional institutions, development partners, funders and civil society groups that recognise the critical role media play in the larger governance and development agendas.

By working in collaboration with leading stakeholders in the media industry, AMI
  • Serves as a point-of-contact for international donors and investors with interests in African media and communications, and “brokers” relationships between stakeholders on the continent and potential external partners
  • Provides for a for the African media industry and media assistance organizations to collaborate and share information
  • Produces and distributes research to help guide investments and activities in African media and communications
  • Promotes media industry professionalization, regulatory reform and technological advancement to better enable reliable, independent information to reach the African public and decision-makers
